When the map view actually helps
A live air traffic map is great for:
- Watching a friend's flight cross the ocean.
- Identifying that aircraft overhead.
- Spotting unusual movements (diversions, holding patterns).
- Plane spotting from a fixed location.
It is not the most efficient way to track your own trip — for that, use a trip-focused tracker.
Gestures and filters
- Pinch to zoom; two-finger drag to rotate where supported.
- Tap any aircraft to see callsign, type, altitude, speed.
- Filter by airline, type, or altitude band to declutter the view.
Useful layers
- Weather radar — the single best predictor of holding and ground stops.
- METAR / TAF at airports for surface conditions.
- Wind aloft for figuring out why a route is going faster or slower than scheduled.
Pair with a trip view
FlightyFlow gives you a live map and a trip view side by side. Use the map when you're curious; use the trip view when you actually have a flight.
