The four ways to look up a flight

You can find any commercial flight using one of four pieces of information:

  1. Flight number — like UA 232 or BA 119. The fastest method.
  2. Route — origin and destination airport codes (e.g. SFO → JFK).
  3. Airline + date — useful when you have a confirmation but not a flight number handy.
  4. Aircraft registration (tail number) — like N12345. For plane spotters and avgeeks.

Step 1: Open a flight tracker

Use a dedicated app like FlightyFlow rather than a search engine. Apps refresh data faster, send push alerts, and present time zones correctly.

Step 2: Search

Type the flight number with no space (UA232) or with a space (UA 232) — both work. For routes, use the three-letter IATA codes. If you're not sure of the code, type the city name; most apps will autocomplete.

Step 3: Pin the flight

Once the right flight loads, tap the star or "Track" button. Pinning enables:

  • Push notifications for status changes
  • Live Activity on the Lock Screen during the flight
  • A widget tile on your Home Screen
  • Sharing with friends or family who want to know when you'll land

Step 4: Read the status correctly

Status text is standardized but easy to misread. Quick translations:

  • Scheduled — the flight is on the books and not yet active.
  • On Time — currently expected to depart and arrive within 14 minutes of schedule.
  • Delayed — currently expected later than scheduled.
  • Boarding / Gate Open — passengers are being processed.
  • In Air — wheels-up confirmed.
  • Landed — wheels-down confirmed.
  • Arrived / At Gate — door opened, deplaning.

A "Cancelled" status means the airline has formally pulled the flight; rebook immediately rather than wait at the airport.

Tracking a friend or family member's flight

Get their flight number from their itinerary. Pin the flight in your tracker and turn on Arrival notifications only — that's usually all the recipient cares about. With FlightyFlow you can share a link that updates live, so non-app users can follow along in a browser.

Pro tips

  • For US domestic flights, gates often update 30–90 minutes before push. Watch the gate field, not the airline website.
  • Layovers are easier to manage when you pin the inbound flight too — you'll see exactly when your aircraft arrives and how realistic your connection is.
  • Weather radar overlays at the destination airport are the single best leading indicator of arrival delay.

Frequently asked

Can I track a flight without the flight number?+

Yes. Search by route (origin and destination), or by airline plus date. Most modern flight trackers will list candidate flights you can pin.

How early can I start tracking a flight?+

Schedules are usually published 11 months out. You can pin a flight at booking; live tracking generally activates a few hours before scheduled departure.
