Is Business Class Worth It? When to Splurge and When to Skip
Honest analysis of when business class is worth the upgrade — by route length, time zone shift, and personal calculus.
When business class is worth it
The math changes by route.
Long-haul (8+ hours), east-bound
Almost always worth it if you'll be working the next day. A flat bed and 7 hours of real sleep is the difference between landing functional and landing destroyed.
Medium-haul (4–7 hours)
Often not worth it on cash. Worth it on miles where 60,000–80,000 points sometimes books a seat that costs $4,000.
Short-haul (under 4 hours)
Almost never worth it on cash. Worth it for the lounge access if you have a long layover.
Domestic US transcon
Premium cabin (not "domestic first") is worth it on JetBlue Mint, American Flagship, Delta One, United Polaris equivalents — all flat beds.
