What you get in premium economy

  • 36–40 inches of pitch, 18–19 inches of width.
  • Footrest, larger IFE.
  • Improved meal vs main cabin.
  • Often a small priority boarding/baggage perk.

What you get in business class

  • 78–80 inches of pitch as a lie-flat bed.
  • Direct aisle access (on most modern carriers).
  • Multi-course meals, real glassware, sleep kit.
  • Priority everything.
  • Lounge access at most carriers.

When premium economy wins

  • Sub-7-hour daytime flights where you don't need to sleep.
  • Routes where business class is double or triple the price (TPAC peaks).
  • When the spend matters and you'll sleep at the hotel that night.

When business class wins

  • Overnight flights where productivity the next day matters.
  • Trips longer than 8 hours.
  • Award redemptions where business is only ~20% more miles.

Our heuristic

If a flight is overnight and over 7 hours and you can't add a buffer day, business class. Otherwise premium economy is the new sweet spot.
