How to Track a Loved One's Flight (Without Driving Yourself Crazy)
Set up flight tracking that quietly notifies you when your friend or family member is in the air, on approach, and at the carousel.
Set it and forget it
Tracking a loved one's flight should be calm, not anxious. The right setup runs in the background and tells you only what you need to know.
Step 1: Get the flight number
Ask for it as soon as the trip is booked. Save it in a calendar event with the date and origin/destination — you'll thank yourself later.
Step 2: Pin the flight in your tracker
Open FlightyFlow, search by flight number, and tap the star. You'll see schedule, aircraft, and seat map for context.
Step 3: Choose only the alerts you actually need
For most family scenarios, the right set is:
- Departed — they're in the air, you can stop checking.
- In Range / 30 minutes out — perfect time to leave for the airport.
- Landed — wheels down, send a "you down?" text.
- At Gate / Baggage — they're walking out.
Skip "Boarding" and "Pushed Back" — they create more anxiety than they remove.
Step 4: Share the live link (optional)
For trips where multiple people care — grandparents, siblings — share a link from the tracker. Recipients can follow along without installing the app.
Step 5: Pre-build a pickup plan
A good pickup plan has three triggers:
- 30 minutes before scheduled landing: check the live position.
- Wheels down: start driving.
- At Gate / Baggage: confirm pickup zone.
Combined with FlightyFlow's Live Activity on your Lock Screen, the whole pickup becomes one glance instead of ten app opens.
