Book early — really early
For Thanksgiving and Christmas, book by September for the best fares. Last-minute holiday tickets are routinely 2–3x normal price.
Pick the right travel days
- Thanksgiving: the Tuesday before is cheaper and less crowded than Wednesday. Saturday return is cheaper than Sunday.
- Christmas: the actual day of (Dec 25) is one of the cheapest and quietest travel days.
- New Year's: Jan 1 morning is surprisingly calm.
Get to the airport early
- Add 60 minutes to your normal arrival window.
- TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are non-negotiable for holiday travel.
- Use the airline app to skip check-in counters when possible.
Have a backup plan
- Identify the next flight on the same route.
- Identify the alternate airport (BWI vs DCA, BUR vs LAX, OAK vs SFO).
- Have the airline phone number saved before you need it.
Use a tracker
A predictive flight tracker like FlightyFlow is most valuable in holiday chaos. When your hub starts cascading delays, you'll see it hours before the airline updates.
At the destination
- Have someone meeting you check the live link, not the airline app.
- Carousel info is on the FlightyFlow trip page.
