Quick facts

Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD / YSSY) is Australia's primary international gateway, sitting just 8 km south of the CBD on Botany Bay.

  • Terminals: T1 (international and a handful of long-haul domestic), T2 (Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex), T3 (Qantas domestic and QantasLink)
  • Curfew: 23:00–06:00 (strict — no scheduled jet ops)
  • Time zone: Australia/Sydney (AEDT October–April with DST)

Getting in

The Airport Link train runs from both T1 and T2/T3 stations to Central in 13 minutes. It's the fastest option and easily beats road traffic. Note the airport-station "gate access fee" (~AUD \$17) which is included in the ticket.

The curfew matters

Late-arriving long-haul flights occasionally divert to Canberra or Brisbane if they slip past 23:00 local. Watch for inbound delays from LAX, DFW, DXB, and SIN — late arrivals into SYD can mean an unexpected overnight away from home.

Lounges worth knowing

  • Qantas First Lounge (T1) — among the best long-haul first-class lounges in the world.
  • Qantas International Business Lounge (T1).
  • Plaza Premium (T1) — Priority Pass.
  • Air New Zealand Lounge (T1) — Star Alliance gold + business.

Track your SYD flight

FlightyFlow is especially handy for the late-evening QF/UA/AA/DL trans-Pacific arrivals, where curfew risk and west-to-east jetstream variability can shift ETA by 30+ minutes inside the final hour.

Frequently asked

How early should I get to SYD for an international flight?+

Three hours is comfortable. Two hours works if you're priority-lane eligible and traveling carry-on only.

Can I sleep at SYD overnight?+

Public areas of T1 are open through the curfew, but seating is limited and the airport is not a comfortable overnight option. Book a Mascot or Wolli Creek hotel instead.
