The carry-on essentials
These never go in checked baggage:
- Passport + a copy stored separately
- Wallet, credit cards, some local currency
- Phone, charger, power bank (under 100 Wh)
- Medications + prescriptions
- A change of clothes
- Toothbrush + travel-size toiletries
Restricted items: a refresher
- Liquids over 100 ml in carry-on are not allowed at most airports (some hubs with new CT scanners are loosening this rule).
- Lithium batteries must be in carry-on, not checked.
- Power banks must be in carry-on; many airlines limit you to two per passenger.
- E-cigarettes / vapes must be in carry-on, not checked.
Documents
- Passport with 6 months validity beyond your trip end date.
- ESTA / ETA / visa as required by destination.
- Onward ticket (for one-way travelers, immigration may ask).
- Hotel reservation printout (paranoid traveler insurance).
On-plane comfort
- Earplugs and an eye mask.
- Compression socks for flights over 4 hours.
- An empty water bottle to fill after security.
- Layers — cabins are unpredictable.
Electronics
- Travel adapter for the destination plug type.
- Universal USB-C charger (modern Apple gear, most Android, most laptops).
- Headphones (active noise cancelling for long-haul is transformative).
