The 30-second answer

Most airlines sell more tickets than seats because some passengers no-show. When everyone shows up, they look for volunteers in exchange for compensation. If no one volunteers, they involuntarily deny boarding to lower-status passengers, with statutory compensation (in the US under DOT 14 CFR Part 250; in the EU under EC 261/2004).

Volunteer math

  • Travel voucher is usually inflated; cash or statement credit is meaningfully more valuable.
  • Hotel + meals if overnight.
  • Confirmed seat on next flight — including upgrade if available.
  • Negotiate — first offer is rarely the best.

Involuntary bumping

EU EC 261 awards €250–600 in cash. US DOT awards 200–400% of the one-way fare in cash. Always insist on cash unless the voucher is exceptionally generous.
