Why EWR is the way it is

Newark Liberty sits inside one of the most congested pieces of airspace on Earth, with airspace shared by JFK and LGA. A single weather event ripples for hours.

Terminals

  • Terminal A — newer; many domestic carriers including Alaska, Delta, Hawaiian.
  • Terminal B — international and some domestic carriers.
  • Terminal C — United's domestic and international hub.

The AirTrain connects all three and to NJ Transit at the EWR station.

Getting there

  • NJ Transit + AirTrain — fastest from Penn Station NYC.
  • Lyft/Uber — ~45 min from Manhattan in normal traffic; 2x in rush hour.
  • PATH + AirTrain is not a single ticket but works on a budget.

Security

  • TSA PreCheck lines run separately at all three terminals.
  • Clear lanes available at A and C.
  • Allow 90 minutes in summer thunderstorm afternoons.

Layover survival

  • United Polaris Lounge in C is the best.
  • For shorter waits, the renovated A terminal has reasonable food.
  • Plug points are abundant at the new gates.
