Boeing 787 vs Airbus A350: Which is the Better Long-Haul Plane?
A detailed comparison of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 — passenger comfort, range, fuel efficiency, and which one airlines (and travelers) prefer.
Two of the great long-haul aircraft
The 787 Dreamliner and the A350 XWB are the two dominant new-generation widebodies in service in 2026. Both are composite-fuselage, fuel-efficient, and quiet by historical standards. The differences are subtle but real.
The passenger experience
Cabin width
- 787: 5.49 m (216 in) interior width.
- A350: 5.61 m (221 in) interior width.
The A350 is slightly wider — usually noticeable as more elbow room in 9-abreast economy.
Windows
- 787: Larger windows with electronic dimming (no shades).
- A350: Standard sliding window shades, slightly smaller windows than the 787.
The 787 wins here for passengers who love a view.
Cabin altitude and humidity
Both maintain a lower cabin altitude (~6,000 ft vs the older standard 8,000 ft) and higher humidity. Less jet lag, less dehydration.
Noise
The A350 is generally a few dB quieter in cruise than the 787.
The airline view
Range and capacity
- 787-9: ~7,565 nm range, ~290 seats typical.
- A350-900: ~8,100 nm range, ~315 seats typical.
- A350-1000: ~8,700 nm range, ~360 seats typical.
The A350-1000 stretches the envelope further than any 787 variant.
Fuel efficiency
Roughly comparable. The A350-900 has a slight edge per seat-mile on long routes.
Maintenance
Both aircraft have had teething problems on entry into service; both are now mature platforms.
Which airlines fly which
- 787 strongholds: ANA, JAL, United, American, British Airways.
- A350 strongholds: Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Qatar, Lufthansa, Delta, Air France.
Which to choose as a passenger
- For a great window seat experience: 787.
- For a quieter, slightly wider cabin: A350.
- For most travelers, the differences are smaller than the carrier's seat configuration — a 787 with 9-abreast economy is much tighter than an A350 with the same.
